Hydro Ingenieure - Vision to clear solutions

Flood protection Krems river

Tasks definition

In the previous years the Krems river repeatedly flowed over the river banks and caused catastrophic flood damages. Protection against the hundred years flood was necessary.

  • Preservation of functional capability and multifunctionality of flowing waters in urban areas.

The entire project area (6,140 m) is located in a dense settled town area (city infrastructure, limited space availability, varied utilization demands on urban flowing waters) and it puts specific demands on planning and construction execution.

Solution
  • Rehabilitation and elevation of river side walls as well as bottom sealing and construction of flood protection walls in the area of existing dams.
  • River construction measures as optimalization of river bed slope and adjustment of flow affecting cross section respectively mean water channel to hydraulic, ecological and urban demands.
  • Renaturation of the weir system for an efficient streaming continuum and nature-oriented design of the river bed to get a heterogeneous water structure (ecological enhancement of the river Krems).
  • River flood plain in a form of a formed river bank board-walk as a new recreational area within easy reach of built-up areas for better quality of life.
