Since 1976 wastewater from the municipial water company of Krems has been biologically treated in the WWTP GAV Krems.
Because of an extension of area covered by the GAV and the updating of the required treatment standards and availability of state-of-the-art technology, it was decided to up-grade the plant to 255,000 PE.
The construction was implemented in phases to meet the growing demand. The upgrading was carried out without interrupting operation of the existing treatment plant.
Based on the analysis of the existing situation and future demands, a master plan for the project implementation was created.
Seven different scenarios were analysed and the most economical solutions for the upgrading of the WWTP were identified. A master plan for the design for planning permission was produced in 2008. Construction was completeted in 2016. Total project cost €45,000,000.
